The son of a grape farmer, Ferruccio Lamborghini served as a mechanic in the Italian Royal Air force during World War II. After the war he started building tractors based on Surplus military hardware. By the mid 1950’s Lamborghini has become one of the largest agricultural manufacturers in the country. He also owned a successful business manufacturing heaters and air conditioners.

Lamborghini’s success allowed him to pursue his interest in cars, including a number of Ferraris. One day, the clutch on his Ferrari broke and he decided to repair it himself. Much to his surprised, he discovered that the Ferrari had the same clutch as his tractors! Lamborghini went to Ferrari and asked for a better replacement. Ferrari responded, saying that he was just a tractor maker, and could not know anything about sports cars.

As a result Lamborghini decided to pursue an automobile manufacturing venture with the goal of bringing to life his vision of a perfect grand tourer.
